Get eyes on it yearly; brush it out once deposits reach roughly an eighth of an inch. Fireplaces around here see light seasonal use, so a sweep every couple of winters is normal — the yearly check exists for the cracking, blockages and water trouble that arrive whether you burn or not.
Directly. The Whittier Narrows quake was centred just east of the city, and chimneys across Monterey Park, Rosemead and Montebello cracked or dropped brick. We still find its signature today in flues that have never had a camera pass — shifted tiles, opened joints, stacks a degree or two off plumb.

The part that fails first is the chase cover up top — it rusts and lets water into the framing — and liners, caps and storm collars age out too. We service the whole assembly.
